Egypt holiday resorts, holidays & hotels

Egypt, the land of ancient wonders, basks under timeless blue skies and almost perpetual sunshine. The Nile is the country's lifeblood and is as important today as it was in the times of the Pharaohs. The river wends its way amongst white-sailed boats (feluccas) and modern cruise ships while its dusky banks rise slowly from clear, still waters over historic architecture towards the cloudless horizon. Sharm El Sheikh is a world class resort on the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. It lies between the Red Sea and Mount Sinai. Sharm El Sheikh is holiday Mecca with high quality big name hotels and restaurants from around the world. It has arguably the best diving and snorkeling in the world. Holidaymakers can enjoy aquatic sports, the sun, and the breathtaking desert landscape.

Egypt Resort reviews

Aswan Egypt's southernmost city and ancient frontier town which has the loveliest setting on the Nile. Situated near the Tropic of Cancer, Aswan is hot and dry nearly all the time, with average daily temperatures ranging from a delicious 23-30°C in the winter to a searing 38-54°C over summer. Late autumn and spring are perfect times to visit. The city, has more of an African ambiance with its numerous Nubian inhabitants providing a difference in culture and custom. Although every bit as touristy as Luxor, the town and its inhabitants are far more laid back and pleasant. A picturesque city, its attraction lies not so much in its historical sites, but in the peacefulness of a felucca cruise at sunset, a visit to the colourful market (Sharia el-Souq), or dinner at one of the floating restaurants on the Nile. It is a perfect base to visit to the magnificent Sun Temple of Ramses II, Abu Simbel.

Cairo is the vibrant, over crowded, dusty and chaotic capital of Egypt. Worth a visit so you can say you've been there and seen the pyramids but unless you're used to city life and the noise then don't stay too long. Africa’s largest city with a population of over 18 million, Cairo is a chaotic mixture of sights, sounds and smells. It is heaving with life, volatile, polluted and boisterous, with an intensity that both exhausts and invigorates the visitor. It is also distinctive with its ancient monuments in juxtaposition to the modern and cosmopolitan. The congested streets of Islamic Cairo are full of donkey carts, traders and mosques, while camels weave their way haughtily between the crumbling pyramids on the outskirts. Taxis clamour for attention and pedestrians elbow their way past busy coffee houses, where those seeking a brief escape from the hustle and bustle sit sipping at a strong cup of coffee while contemplating the smoke rings of a ‘hubbly bubbly’ water pipe – in true Egyptian style.

El Gouna Nestled at the edge of a desert of rich, red sand, the new resort of El Gouna is built on a series of islands encompassed by colourful lagoons. Soak up the sun on the sandy beaches, home to a variety of watersports as well as a number of diving centres. There is little in the way of shopping here but there are a few cafés, boutiques, souvenir and jewellery shops. For the shopaholics take a trip to into Hurghada for a day of souvenir and bargain hunting. The bazaar is a great place to haggle with the locals. El Gouna is about 17 miles north of Hurghada.

Hurghada Backed by desert sands, the clear waters of the Red Sea are a favourite with sun-seekers and divers alike. It's ideal for those looking to spend the day on the beach with snorkelling and scuba-diving. The sea is full of tropical fish that dart in and out of the living coral reefs. For shopaholics the bazaar area is ideal - you are expected to haggle with the locals and can pick up great gold and leather bargains. For nightlife many of the hotels provide entertainment plus the town has a handful of bars and restaurants.

Luxor is located 675km south of Cairo on the east bank of the majestic River Nile. Not many resorts can boast a king’s ransom of ancient sights barely a stone’s throw away from their luxurious hotel pools, but Luxor is actually built on the 4,000 year old ruins of Thebes.

A day trip to Mount Sinai is a must with a visit to St. Catherine's monastery famous for the alleged burning of  St. Catherine where it is said that the Catherine wheel firework was named after her. Sharm el Sheikh is an all year resort with daytime temperatures in the mid 20's in winter and reaching a scorching 40 degrees in the summer. Please take plenty of high factor sun block with you - especially for the children, as you can't always believe that it "does what it says on the tin" (bottle) when buying abroad.

Taba There aren't many resorts in the world where you can look out of your hotel window and see several other countries. Taba overlooks Jordan, Israel and Saudi Arabia, and is developing swiftly as a tourism center. It currently has good restaurants and beach cafes, and the border can be crossed on foot, with a bus service into Eilat.
